It was April 20, 2011 and I was a freshman in college. When I look back on the “halcyon days”, I realize they weren’t so. I was a misfit in the worst way imaginable. Entering my first year of independence, I think I failed in actually being worthy of said independence. I was disheveled, poorly dressed, nutritionally-deficient, and carried myself with no modicum of confidence.
When you have zero confidence or self-respect, people will see that right off the bat. They will either pick on you with no fear of reprisal, or they’ll avoid you outright. It’s funny how we usually associate the past as a time of peace. In actuality, the past had its own share of sufferings. Looking back, we realize we’ve ascended past those harsh times. We realize the present is good enough as it is. The present is a gift, built on the blood, sweat, and tears of those bygone days.
But what does that have to do with 4/20: The International Day of Obnoxious Stoners? Well, I saw that today was April 20 and started reminiscing. I looked back on my first year of college and thought about the day (4/20) I toked one up with a friend of mine. You see, I had a friend who was pretty much my sole source of getting things. I remember how she and I went to a different dorm on campus to get some weed from two sophomores. We used a bowl that I tried to light up but burned myself by accident. At the time of typing, I can faintly feel that burn on my finger.
They were cool dudes, really cool. I may not be a fan of pot, but I can appreciate how laid back people get after taking a puff. This friend of mine made my 4/20 worthwhile, I really owe it to her.
Years later, I maintain a quasi-conservative stance on the substance. Sure, it’s not popular to have a position like this but if it’s counter-cultural, count me in. I personally don’t care if pot becomes legal (I believe there should be restrictions, though). It’s not the substance itself that bothers me. Why should it bother me if I don’t use it?
No, it’s the people that use it, the stoners. I swear, stoners are part of a freakish cult, I’m not even kidding. They disseminate factoids saying that pot cures cancer, which is logically ridiculous and laughably incredulous.
Cancer cells are normal cells that grow out of control and invade other parts of your body. If pot can kill cancer cells, it can also kill normal cells. Either pot itself is extrememly dangerous and should be avoided, or the claim itself is just wrong. I’m putting my money on the latter.
Pot users also harp on about how this substance can cure depression. Hold the frick up. If you’re feeling depressed, you should not be taking drugs. Suppose you mitigate those feelings of melancholy…what happens when those feelings come back? Are you going to take another puff at it? And then another without tackling the cause of said depression? Doing so is setting a dangerous precedent for yourself.
If you’re feeling depressed, you need to get to the root cause of it. Are you feeling inadequate in life? Are you on your way to achieving your dreams? Are you happy in your current relationship? If you’re feeling depressed, you need to get to the core and obliterate that little b*tch, not treat it with temporary drugs.
If you want to smoke the green crap, I. Personally. Don’t. Care. All I’m saying is this: Don’t delude yourself by thinking it’s a magical plant that cures diseases. It’s not. It’s a plant laced with a psychoactive chemical called THC. As a matter of principle, you should avoid substances that detach you from the physical realm, man!
